Joel Silver's planned Escape From New York reboot may turn out to be more of a team effort, as venerable sci-fi magazine Starlog claims the script has elevated a number of supporting characters to co-lead status, effectively making antihero Snake Plissken the leader of a ragtag group of survivors a la the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Here's the rundown from Starlog's studio source:

"Plissken's team consists of Mina, a warzone journalist framed for murder and living in the shadows of New York as a scavenger; Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief; Gareth, the last surviving member of the President's security detail who harbors a dangerous secret; and The Brain, Plissken's former partner-in-crime who left him to die after a botched robbery."

The source further claimed that Charlie Hunnam of Pacific Rim, Hollywood's current everybody-wants-him guy, is the top contender to play Plissken, although his Pacific Rim 2 commitment and the prospect of playing King Arthur for Sherlock Holmes's Guy Ritchie might be an obstacle to overcome. Nevertheless, concept art has apparently been commissioned featuring Hunnam in the role, presumably to show with financiers with the understanding that the face behind the artwork doesn't always indicate who will get the job.

(Remember when Soarise Ronan was definitely going to be Scarlet Witch, because somebody saw a mock-up of her wearing the costume? And then the movie didn't use the costume from the comics or Soarise Ronan? Yeah....)

If not Hunnam, Silver Pictures is reportedly keen on getting The Walking Dead's Jon Bernthal or The Guest's Dan Stevens for the role.

The remake should have a director by year's end and presumably start filming not long after that.
